Discord shuts down Nazi accounts following Charlottesville violence

Gamer voice and chat app Discord today announced plans to shut down the server for altright.com and remove a number of accounts associated with the violence that took place this weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia, that left one dead and 19 injured. The closure of the Discord accounts hosted by the service comes hours after GoDaddy then Google removed Nazi supporter The Daily Stormer from their domain hosting services.

Discord removed the accounts from the chat app for violating Discord guidelines and terms of service, the site said in a tweet. It has more than 45 million users, and it’s becoming one of the top options for in-game voice chat.

VentureBeat has reached out to Discord regarding specifics on servers or accounts removed from the service. We will update this story if we hear back.

Prior to the events in Charlottesville, Airbnb denied service to white supremacist groups gathering to take place in protests against the removal of a statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee.

Like GoDaddy, Facebook, and several other tech companies, Discord has been criticized in the past for allowing groups to operate on its platform that carry out online abuse, espouse discrimination, or promote violence.

Yes, for those of you at home, that's the widely known acronym for "Bad Ass Mother F***er."

Musk playfully threw out the acronym as a "scientific term" Tesla's development team used as they designed the new big rigs. The name sounds ridiculous — but the specs, if they wind up being legit, are actually pretty impressive.

Musk claims the Semi can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just five seconds, well faster than traditional diesel trucks. That's the cab by itself or with an empty trailer loaded on. Read more...
